Wine Racking Systems; Timber Versus Metal
If you are a serious wine buff, trying out wine racks is paramount and, even, constitutes an important investment.
For someone who just likes the infrequent bottle, common wooden or steel wine racks will suffice.
But for the individual who intends to collect wine and store bottles formonths or years, wine racking systems are critical to protect against humidity and changes in temperature that can damage your cherished wine.
A wine rack system should also be built with odorless wood to avoid adversely impacting the flavor of the wine you store in it. One of the appropriate materials is maple, but there are other choices as well, for example cedar and pine.
There are a few fundamental factors to examine when you buy wine racks.
- Your wine racking unit should allow you to grab the bottles without having to disturb or move other wine bottles to reach it.
- Make sure that the racking unit allows your wine bottles to lay horizontally. This is extremely important because it keeps the cork in contact with the wine inside, preventing the cork from drying out and becoming brittle. There is nothing more infuriating than opening a bottle of wine only to have the cork disintegrate, ruining your wine.
- Make sure your wine racking unit provides ample room between bottles. This allows for air circulation and more even temperatures….resulting in, without a doubt, better aging and better wine when it’s time to enjoy a bottle you have been storing for that unique occassion.
Although you can buy metalic wine racks — and some are enchanting– for the accomplished collector who intends to store wine, timber is the way to go, as they do not readily conduct temperature shifts within your wine. Furthermore, the end result is a better aging process.
Lastly, choose wine racks that are free standing. This not only creates a better visual appearance, but saves a lot of room also. Some systems are stackable….giving you the flexibility to grow your collection gradually.
