To put or Not To Put the china on the Registry

My fiance and I just registered for our wedding over the past two weekends and before going nearly everyone I’ve talked to has told me “put the china on the registry, you never know you may get it.” I still thought hmm… I know I’m not going to get it so I should still leave it off the registry. After taking this all to heart, we drove off to the Bed Bath and Beyond at the mall. We sat down with the registry consultant who happen to have the china pattern I loved sitting in front of him. Opal Innocence by Lenox is my dream china pattern. The man proceeds to set us up in the system and start talking to us about … dun dun dun… the china. He again reaffirms what everyone else had said “put the china on the registry, you never know you may get it.” So I reluctantly comment, this pattern here is the one I wanted. He responds by putting Opal Innocence, 8 table settings, wanted to my registry. Fine fine, it was finally decided it was on the registry.

The next day I log into my account online to look over the registry and at the top of the list, you guessed it, is the china. It was then for the first time I noticed the price and amount of china the man had put on my registry. The 5 piece set was around $130 and he put me down for wanting 8 sets! That’s $1,040. Cha… I’m definitely not getting that at the bridal shower. I begin to look further down the page and notice along with the 5 piece set, he also put the gravy boat, cake stand, creamer, sugar bowl, tea pot, flutes, etc. All having pretty significant price tags themselves. Freaking out I delete the china from the list.

Next place of registry: Macy’s. We head out to Macy’s the following weekend. We get set up and start working our way around the room. First stop, you know it, the china. I sit there for a moment talking it over with my mom. “Maybe we don’t need 8 settings, maybe that was a little too much. Maybe 4 settings would be more reasonable for someone.” The lady on the floor once again repeats… “put the china on the registry, you never know you may get it.” So I scan the Opal Innocence 5 piece setting at $130 each and put it down for wanting 4 sets. We move throughout the store scanning our dream list of appliances and head back to the desk to have our registry finalized and printed. Once printed the lady explains she will take a look through to make sure we hit all the main things (like she’d know what we need and don’t need?). She notices the china right away… “only 4? Are you sure?”, she remarks. “Yes 4, It’s only me and him, and then maybe my mom and dad for a formal dinner”, I respond.

When it comes down to it, china is a really nice addition to registry but how often do you really use it? If someone is actually going to get me the china I will be grateful, but if they don’t I will be able to live without it. One thing I have learned is make sure you listen to your own instincts. China etiquette says you need 8-12 place setting for entertaining parties. But if you’re like me and plan on having Thanksgiving with just your mom and dad, cut back on the china it will save your bridal shower guests from having a heart attack after printing your registry and will make it so that you get the stuff you really need for day to day married life.
