Bergerac Wines and the Grapes that make them
After the decimation of the vineyards of France in the 19th Century, Bergerac wines rose from the ashes to become one of the great wine appellations of France. Although they are overshadowed by the Bordeaux wines, they should not be overlooked as they grow the same varieties. The Bergerac area has a similar weather pattern to Bordeaux but milder and more sunshine.
How big is the area planted in vines? There are approximately 12,220 hectares of land give to growing vines and they produce 165,000 hectolitres of wine. There are around 1240 winegrowers of which 45% are independent and the other 55% belong to the cooperatives.
The Bergerac area is split into 4 regional appellations: red Bergerac, dry Bergerac, white Côtes de Bergerac and Bergerac rosé. It is also split intothe terroir appellations of
- the dessert wines of Monbazillac and Saussignac,
- the great red wines of Côtes de Bergerac, Montravel and Pécharmant, Montravel and
- the great Bergeracs for the dry wine
- and Côtes de Montravel, Haut-Montravel and Rosette for the sweet wines.
Which grapes are used for which wine?
- Pécharmant (red wine) is a special blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec that reflect a unique terrior—elegant and age well. This is a wine to lie down.
- Rosette (semi-sweet wines) is a straw-coloured blend of three grapes—Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle resulting in a rounded elegant wine
- Montravel (red, dry white, & semi-sweet wines) The production of this area is split between the red grapes of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec; and the white grapes of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle
- Bergerac (red, rose and dry white wines) The reds are fruity and elegant and are a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The roses are a blend of the same grapes. The dry white wines are aromatic and made from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. These grapes produced a range of wines from fruity to fuller rounded styles.
- Cote de Bergerac (red and semi-sweet wines) The reds are made from a traditional blend producing powerful wines which will age well. The semi-sweet wines are made from the Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes are best drunk young when they are full of fresh flavour.
- Saussignac (red and semi-sweet wines) The reds are made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc which produce an easy to drink pleasant style red, but the area is most famous for the semi-sweet wines blended from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Ondenc and Muscadelle grapes. They are subjected to botrytis (noble rot) that gives an intense, complex taste.
- Monbazillac (sweet wines). These are blended from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes. Only those affected by the ‘nobel rot’ are used and are handpicked. This produces a powerful sweet wine with a bouquet of peach, acacia and honey. These wines are drank as an aperitif and digestive and is great with foie gras.
