Great Wall or Imperial Palace?
If you had to choose one architectural icon of Ancient and Imperial China, what would it be? I think most people think about either the Great Wall or the Beijing Imperial Palace(Forbidden City). Which of the two would you choose?
For my, definitely the Great Wall simply for the fact that even though the Imperial Palace was built by Han Chinese in the Ming dynasty, it stands as a simple of the foreign Manchurian rule of the Qing dynasty. And architecturally, the palace is nowhere as elegant as the Tang dynasty buildings and palaces. While the Great Wall isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing thing in the world, it stands as a testament of the power of the ancient Chinese civilization.
Personally I enjoyed the Great Wall more than the Imperial Palace and the other sites in Beijing.
That is not to say I was not impressed by the Imperial Palace, the Summer Palace, or the Temple of Heaven.
When you are walking on the Great Wall the scope of the construction begins to impress you as to how much effort was involved and the difficulty in building it.
